I’m still getting a feel for what to talk about here, so we’re working with a pretty wide net. For fans of urban planning (i.e. everyone), this week the City of Tallahassee received top honors from the American Public Works Association Florida Chapter for the FAMU Way project as the recipient of the 2022 Project of the Year Award. From the article:
Through the project, FAMU Way was extended, creating a new east-to-west connection from South Monroe Street to Lake Bradford Road, approximately 1.5 miles. From its inception, the project aimed to provide multimodal uses. Bike facilities, a multiuse trail, wide sidewalks and on-street parking, including ADA compliant spaces, were constructed. With a multitude of overhead utilities moved underground and the addition of ample landscaping, custom lighting and public art on utility boxes along the corridor, it is now one of the most beautiful roadways in Tallahassee.
FAMU Way was also designed to be a destination. It offers a playground, picnic spaces, flexible market space and event plaza. Other amenities are currently in development by the Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency, including the Skateable Art Park, a public restroom and the History and Culture Trail featuring educational and public art elements.
I can personally recommend driving this stretch of road after dark on one of the many Spin rental scooters in the area, and at least two other people to chase around and giggle with as you zip around into the night. Just watch out for disappearing sidewalks as they’re wrapping construction up for good.
